Is your car vibrating more than usual? Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair in San Jose, CA explains how motor mounts work and the warning signs they may be failing.

When you bring your vehicle into Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair Inc. here in San Jose, one of the most common things we hear is:

"My car just doesn't feel as smooth as it used to."

A lot of people assume that's just part of a car getting older — but in many cases, the real issue comes down to something most drivers have never heard of:

    motor mounts

  .

Let's walk you through it the way we explain it to our customers every day.

  What Motor Mounts Actually Do

Your engine isn't just sitting under the hood — it's securely fastened to your vehicle using motor mounts. These mounts are made from a combination of metal and rubber (and sometimes fluid-filled components) designed to do two critical jobs:

Hold the engine firmly in place

    Absorb vibration and engine movement

At Wilson Motorsports, we like to describe them as the "buffer zone" between your engine and the rest of your car. Without them, every bit of engine movement would transfer directly into the frame — and into your hands on the steering wheel. For San Jose drivers navigating everything from highway commutes on 101 to stop-and-go traffic on Capitol Expressway, that constant vibration adds up fast.

  Why Motor Mounts Matter

Modern engines generate a lot of power. Every time you accelerate, shift gears, or even sit at idle, your engine is naturally trying to move and twist. Good motor mounts keep that movement controlled and smooth. When they start to wear out, that control disappears — and you start to feel it.

Whether you're driving a daily commuter or a high-performance vehicle, healthy motor mounts are essential for a safe, comfortable ride. This is true whether you're a San Jose local or driving in from nearby communities like Santa Clara, Milpitas, or Campbell.

Signs Your Motor Mounts May Be Failing

Here's what we commonly see in our shop:

Increased vibration at stoplights or idle

Clunking or knocking when shifting gears

    A noticeable "jerk" when accelerating

Excess engine movement under the hood

If your car feels rougher than it used to, there's a good chance your motor mounts are no longer doing their job. Have you been noticing any of these symptoms on your commute lately? It may be time to get them checked.

What Happens If You Ignore the Problem

This is where small issues can turn into expensive repairs. Worn motor mounts don't just affect comfort — they can lead to:

Stress on your transmission and drivetrain

Damage to hoses, wiring, and surrounding components

    Exhaust system misalignment or breakage

    Long-term engine and component wear

At Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair, we've seen cases where a simple mount replacement could have prevented much larger — and much more costly — repairs down the line. Don't let a small problem become a big one.

Why Replacing Motor Mounts Is Worth It

We understand — motor mount replacement isn't always the first thing people want to spend money on. But it's one of those repairs that protects everything else in your vehicle. Replacing worn mounts will:

    Restore a smooth, comfortable ride

    Keep your engine properly aligned

    Reduce stress on surrounding components

Help extend the life of your vehicle

Most importantly, it brings your car back to the way it's supposed to feel.

  Our Advice

Motor mounts typically wear out between 60,000 and 120,000 miles, depending on driving conditions and habits. Because they fail gradually, many drivers don't notice how bad things have gotten until after they're replaced. If you've noticed increased vibration, unusual noises, or a rougher ride, it's worth having them checked by a trusted San Jose auto repair shop.

How to Know It's Time to Replace Your Ball Joints and Tie Rods

Learn the warning signs of failing ball joints and tie rods, and how Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair in San Jose can help keep your vehicle in top condition.

         Introduction

Your vehicle's steering and suspension system are vital to its performance and—more importantly—your safety. Two of the most overlooked components in this system are the

           ball joints

          and

           tie rods

. At Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair, we regularly help customers stay ahead of major issues by replacing worn parts before they become dangerous. So today, let's break down what ball joints and tie rods are, how to know when they need replacing, and why timely service matters.

What Are Ball Joints and Tie Rods?

          Think of

           ball joints

as the pivot points between your wheels and suspension. They allow your wheels to move up and down with the road while also turning left and right.

           Tie rods

, on the other hand, connect the steering rack to the wheels. When you turn your steering wheel, the tie rods push or pull the wheels in the desired direction.

Both components work together to give you

           a smooth, responsive ride

          and

           precise steering control

on Silicon Valley's roads and highways.

Signs Your Ball Joints or Tie Rods May Be Failing

Just like tires or brake pads, these parts wear out over time—especially if you drive on rough roads, like some of the roads here in the Bay Area, off-road, or tow heavy loads.

Here are some common warning signs:

            Uneven or excessive tire wear

Steering that feels loose or wanders

Poor alignment or pulling to one side

            Visible damage or excessive play

If you're noticing any of these symptoms, it's time to get your suspension checked—ASAP.

         Why Prompt Replacement Matters

Ignoring worn ball joints or tie rods can have serious consequences:

            Loss of steering control

            Tire damage

            Compromised suspension geometry

            Increased risk of accidents

In worst-case scenarios, a failed ball joint or tie rod can lead to

a wheel collapsing or detaching while driving

, which can be particularly dangerous in Silicon Valley traffic. That's why we always stress: if something feels off, let a professional inspect it.

The Importance of Transmission Services for Cars and Trucks

The transmission: one of the most important parts of your vehicle.

At Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair in beautiful San Jose, California, we understand that the transmission is one of the most important parts of your vehicle. It’s responsible for transferring power from the engine to the wheels, allowing your car or truck to move smoothly. Without a properly functioning transmission, you could run into serious trouble on the road. That's why transmission services are essential for the long-term health of your vehicle.

           What is a Transmission?

Before diving into why transmission services matter, it’s helpful to understand what the transmission actually does. In simple terms, it controls the power from the engine and adjusts it to change gears, helping your vehicle accelerate, decelerate, and move in reverse. There are two main types of transmissions: automatic and manual. Automatic transmissions do this work for you, while manual transmissions require the driver to shift gears manually.

Why is Transmission Service So Important?

Your transmission works hard every time you drive. Over time, the fluid inside it can become dirty or low, which can lead to problems like slipping gears, delayed shifting, or strange noises. Regular transmission services, like fluid checks and changes, can prevent these issues and ensure your car or truck runs smoothly. Here’s why transmission services are so important:

            Prevent Costly Repairs:

Transmission repairs or replacements can be expensive. By keeping up with regular maintenance, like fluid checks and flushes, you can avoid major transmission problems down the road.

Extend the Life of Your Vehicle:

Regular transmission service helps your vehicle last longer. When the transmission is well-maintained, it runs more efficiently, which can also improve your fuel economy.

            Avoid Dangerous Situations:

If your transmission fails, it can cause your car to stop running or struggle to shift gears. This can leave you stranded on the road or, worse, cause an accident. Regular services help prevent these dangerous situations.

            Smooth Driving Experience:

No one wants to drive a car that jerks, hesitates, or makes strange noises. A well-maintained transmission ensures smooth acceleration, deceleration, and shifting for a more comfortable and enjoyable ride.

What Does a Transmission Service Include?

Transmission services can vary, but most commonly, they include:

            Fluid Check and Replacement:

Transmission fluid lubricates the components inside your transmission, preventing friction and heat buildup. Over time, this fluid can become contaminated and lose its effectiveness. A transmission service includes checking the fluid level, condition, and replacing it if necessary.

            Filter Replacement:

The transmission filter helps keep dirt and debris out of the transmission. If it becomes clogged, it can cause your transmission to malfunction. Replacing the filter is part of regular transmission maintenance.

            Fluid Flush:

A transmission flush involves removing all the old fluid and replacing it with fresh fluid. This is a more thorough service than just topping up the fluid, and it helps keep the transmission in top condition.

            Diagnostic Check:

A technician may also run diagnostics to check for any potential problems, such as slipping gears or strange noises, which could indicate that a more serious issue is brewing.

How Often Should You Get Transmission Service?

The timing for transmission service varies depending on the make and model of your vehicle. However, most experts recommend having your transmission fluid checked every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. If you do a lot of towing or use in heavy duty applications we would recommend transmission services about twice as often or every 15,000 to 30,000 miles. Always check your vehicle’s owner manual for specific recommendations, and don’t hesitate to bring your car or truck in to Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair in San Jose, California for an inspection if you notice any signs of transmission trouble.

           Signs You Need Transmission Service

Keep an eye out for warning signs that your transmission may need service, such as:

Essential Maintenance Tips from Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair

When it comes to vehicle maintenance, car tires are often overlooked. However, tires are one of the most important components of your car, as they connect your vehicle to the road, affecting your safety, handling, and overall driving experience. At Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair, we understand the vital role tires play in your vehicle’s performance, which is why we want to share some essential tips on how to care for them and when to know it’s time for replacement.

           Why Tires Matter

Your tires are the only part of your car that touch the road, so keeping them in good shape is crucial. Worn-out tires can compromise your car's braking distance, handling, fuel efficiency, and safety. In fact, tire failure is one of the leading causes of accidents, especially during wet or slippery conditions. Regular tire maintenance helps to ensure that your vehicle performs at its best and keeps you safe on the road.

           Types of Tires

Before diving into maintenance tips, it’s important to understand the different types of tires:

            All-Season Tires

: Ideal for year-round use in regions with moderate weather. They offer a balanced performance in both wet and dry conditions.

            Summer Tires

: Designed for warmer climates, they provide excellent traction in dry conditions but can lose their grip in cold weather.

            Winter Tires

: Optimized for snow, ice, and low temperatures. Their tread patterns and rubber compounds allow for better traction in freezing conditions.

            Performance Tires

: Often found on sports cars, these tires are designed for handling and speed but may wear out faster and perform poorly in colder weather.

Choosing the right tire for your driving conditions and vehicle type is critical to ensuring the best performance and longevity.

           Tire Maintenance Tips

Proper tire care not only extends the lifespan of your tires but also enhances your safety on the road. Here are some key tips for maintaining your tires:

           Check Tire Pressure Regularly

Low or high tire pressure can lead to uneven tire wear, poor handling, and reduced fuel efficiency. Make it a habit to check your tire pressure at least once a month and before long trips. Tires should be inflated according to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure, which can usually be found on the sticker inside your driver’s side door.

           Rotate Your Tires

Tire rotation ensures even wear and helps extend the life of your tires. Most experts recommend rotating your tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, but this may vary depending on your vehicle and driving habits. Proper rotation can also improve your car's handling and reduce vibrations.

           Inspect Tire Tread

The tread on your tires is essential for grip and traction, especially in wet conditions. Use the penny test: insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see the top of his head, it’s time for new tires. Regularly checking for any signs of damage or uneven wear can prevent more serious issues down the road.

           Align Your Wheels

Misaligned wheels can lead to uneven tire wear and affect your car’s steering, causing it to pull to one side. If your car drifts or vibrates even when you’re driving straight, it may be time for a wheel alignment. Getting your alignment checked at least once a year can help ensure proper tire wear and smoother handling.

           Balance Your Tires

Tires that aren’t properly balanced can cause vibrations, which not only affect comfort but can lead to uneven wear. If you notice unusual vibrations or feel that your steering wheel shakes, it may be time to have your tires balanced.

           Drive Gently

Aggressive driving, such as hard braking, rapid acceleration, and sharp turns, can cause excessive wear on your tires. Smooth, controlled driving not only extends the life of your tires but also improves your vehicle’s fuel efficiency.

Know When to Replace Your Tires

Even with proper maintenance, tires don’t last forever. Most tires have a lifespan of 6 to 10 years, but their condition is the ultimate factor. If you notice significant wear, bulges, or punctures, it’s time for a replacement. Don’t wait for a blowout to replace worn-out tires—your safety depends on it.

Understanding the Check Engine Light: What You Need to Know

The dreaded "check engine" light ...

The dreaded “check engine” light is one of the most common — and often most confusing — alerts on your dashboard. While it can be tempting to ignore it or hope it goes away, that small yellow light could be a warning sign that your vehicle needs attention. Here at Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair, we’ve seen everything from minor issues to major engine problems triggered by that simple light. To help you understand what’s going on when it lights up, we’ve put together some essential information.

What Does the Check Engine Light Mean?

The check engine light (CEL) is part of your car’s onboard diagnostics system, or OBD-II, which monitors the performance of critical components like the engine, exhaust, and transmission. When the system detects a problem — anything from a loose gas cap to a serious engine malfunction — the light will illuminate.

While it may seem like a mysterious or vague signal, the light comes in two common forms:

            Steady Light

: This indicates a problem that should be checked soon, but the car is still drivable.

            Flashing Light

: This means there’s a more serious issue, such as misfiring, which could cause significant damage to the engine or the exhaust system. If the light is flashing, it’s time to get to a mechanic immediately. We would recommend in this case calling us immediately and possibly have your vehicle towed to the shop rather than drive it to prevent more damage from occurring to the vehicle.

Common Causes of a Check Engine Light

The causes behind a check engine light can range from simple to complex. Here are some of the most common:

            Loose or Faulty Gas Cap

A loose, cracked, or improperly sealed gas cap can trigger the CEL. This problem is often overlooked but can cause fuel vapors to escape, affecting your car’s emissions system.

            Oxygen Sensor Failure

The oxygen sensor measures how much oxygen is in your car's exhaust and ensures the fuel-to-air ratio is just right. If it fails, it can cause your vehicle to burn more fuel, decrease efficiency, and even damage other parts of the engine over time.

            Catalytic Converter Issues

The catalytic converter reduces harmful emissions from your car. If it malfunctions, your vehicle could fail emissions tests, consume more fuel, or even cause the engine to stall.

            Mass Airflow Sensor Problems

This sensor helps regulate the amount of fuel the engine gets by measuring the volume of air entering the intake. A malfunctioning mass airflow sensor can lead to poor fuel efficiency, stalling, or even engine misfires.

Ignition Coil or Spark Plug Problems

Faulty ignition coils or spark plugs can cause engine misfires, which, in turn, can lead to increased fuel consumption, rough idling, and poor performance.

            Vacuum Leak

A vacuum leak in the engine can disrupt the air/fuel mixture, leading to poor performance, rough idling, or stalling. This problem can also trigger a check engine light.

            Transmission Problems

Sometimes, a transmission issue can set off the check engine light. These issues often require more extensive repair and shouldn’t be ignored.

It depends on the severity of the issue. If the light is steady and the car seems to run fine, you may be able to drive it to the mechanic for diagnosis. However, if the light is flashing, it’s a sign of a potentially serious problem that could cause long-term damage, so you should pull over and call for roadside assistance if needed.

Tires are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road, so proper tire maintenance is essential for safety and performance. We suggest checking tire pressure at least once a month to ensure they're properly inflated. Underinflated or overinflated tires can affect fuel efficiency and handling. Additionally, rotating your tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles promotes even wear and ensures that your vehicle handles well. If you notice any signs of damage, such as punctures or uneven tread wear, it’s time to visit us for an inspection.

Your vehicle relies on a variety of fluids to operate correctly, including engine coolant, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and brake fluid. Keeping an eye on fluid levels and topping them off as needed is crucial for preventing engine overheating, poor performance, and unnecessary repairs. We also recommend having your fluids inspected regularly for leaks, which could be a sign of a more serious problem.

Your engine needs a clean air supply to run efficiently, and your air filter plays a key role in providing that. A dirty air filter can reduce fuel efficiency and engine performance. Likewise, the cabin air filter ensures the air inside your car is clean and free from allergens, dust, and pollutants. Replacing both filters regularly (usually every 12,000 to 15,000 miles) will help maintain good engine health and air quality inside your vehicle.

The belts and hoses in your vehicle help power critical systems, such as the engine cooling and air conditioning. Over time, belts can crack or wear, and hoses can develop leaks. Regular inspection is essential for preventing sudden breakdowns. At

Your suspension system ensures a smooth ride and proper handling. It includes components such as shocks, struts, and springs, which are essential for controlling your vehicle’s stability on the road. If you notice your vehicle bouncing excessively, pulling to one side, or making strange noises, it's time for a suspension inspection. We also check your steering system to ensure safe, responsive handling.

The timing belt or chain ensures that your engine’s camshaft and crankshaft rotate in sync. If this critical part fails, it can cause severe engine damage. Many vehicles require a timing belt replacement every 60,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on the make and model. At

Why Preventative Maintenance is Essential for San Jose Drivers

Living in San Jose means dealing with a variety of driving conditions, from urban traffic to occasional mountain trips to Lake Tahoe or over the hill to Santa Cruz. Preventative maintenance ensures your vehicle is ready for anything. By following a regular maintenance schedule, you’ll avoid breakdowns, improve fuel efficiency, and enhance the safety and reliability of your vehicle. Not to mention, taking care of your vehicle helps maintain its resale value, so when the time comes to upgrade, you’ll get the most out of your investment.

Driving with warped rotors can lead to dangerous situations. When brakes pulse or vibrate, it can cause longer stopping distances. This increases the likelihood of accidents. Moreover, other brake components may wear out faster when rotors are warped, leading to costly repairs.3

The Mechanics of Brake Rotor Distortion

Brake rotors are metal discs that help stop your vehicle when the brake pads squeeze them. Over time, various factors can cause these rotors to distort. This warping can lead to uneven surfaces that affect braking efficiency.

Factors Contributing to Warping: Heat and Wear

The main reasons for rotor warpage include:

            Excessive heat:

High temperatures from hard braking can cause the metal to expand and warp.

            Uneven wear:

If brake pads wear down unevenly, it can lead to rotor distortion.

            Poor installation:

Incorrectly mounted rotors can warp over time.

            Environmental conditions:

Salt, dirt, and other substances can accelerate wear.

           Pulsating Brakes: The Telltale Sign

A primary symptom of warped rotors is pulsating brakes. When you press the brake pedal, you may feel vibrations. This discomfort is often your first clue that something is wrong.

           Noise and Vibration During Braking

In addition to pulsation, noises such as grinding or squeaking can occur. These sounds may indicate that the brake pads are not making even contact with the rotor due to warping.

           Reduced Braking Efficiency and Performance

Warped rotors may also lead to lower braking power. You might notice that your vehicle requires more pressure on the brake pedal to slow down. This can be alarming and dangerous if not addressed promptly.

Start by examining your rotors visually. Look for signs of wear, grooves, or uneven surfaces. If you see anything unusual, further inspection is necessary.

Measuring Rotor Thickness Variation with a Dial Indicator

A dial indicator can measure rotor thickness. If the thickness varies significantly, this often indicates warpage. This tool is useful for getting an exact measurement.

Welcome back to the Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair blog! Today, we’re diving into an essential topic every car and truck owner should understand: the importance of replacing shocks and coil springs. Whether you’re navigating city streets, cruising down the highway, or taking on uneven terrain, your vehicle's suspension system plays a critical role in providing a smooth and safe ride.

           Understanding Shocks and Coil Springs

Before we dig into the details of replacement, let’s briefly discuss what shocks and coil springs do.

           - **Shocks:** Also known as shock absorbers, these components are crucial for controlling the impact and rebound of your vehicle’s springs and suspension. They help stabilize the vehicle during bumpy rides, smooth out the ride, and improve handling and braking performance.

           - **Coil Springs:** These are designed to manage the weight of your vehicle and absorb road shock. They allow your vehicle to bounce smoothly and help keep the tires in contact with the road. Coil springs are essential for maintaining your vehicle’s ride height and supporting its overall load.

Signs That You Need to Replace Shocks and Coil Springs

Over time, shocks and coil springs can wear out and lose their effectiveness. Here are some signs you should look out for:

           1. **Rough Ride:** If you notice that bumps feel harsher than usual or the vehicle struggles to glide over uneven surfaces, it’s a strong indication that your shocks are failing.

           2. **Leaking Fluid:** Shocks that are leaking hydraulic fluid indicate that they’re damaged and no longer provide adequate absorption.

           3. **Excessive Body Roll:** If your vehicle sways or rolls excessively during turns, this may signal that the shocks are worn out.

           4. **Unstable Braking:** If your vehicle dips excessively during braking or experiences nose dives, it’s wise to inspect your suspension system.

           5. **Uneven Tire Wear:** If your tires are wearing unevenly, it could be a result of worn shocks and springs affecting alignment.

           6. **Increased Stopping Distance:** Worn out shock absorbers can lead to extended stopping distances, making your vehicle less safe.

           The Replacement Process

Replacing shocks and coil springs is not a simple DIY project for those untrained in auto repair. We have seen many customers try to DIY their shocks, and many have issues. However, it’s critical for maintaining ride quality and safety. Here’s what you can expect during the replacement process at Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair:

           1. **Inspection:** We will begin with a thorough inspection of your suspension system to identify wear points and determine if both shocks and springs need replacement.

           3. **Safe Removal:** Using professional tools, we will safely remove the old shocks and coil springs. This involves lifting the vehicle and properly securing it to avoid accidents.

           5. **Alignment Check:** After installation, we will perform a wheel alignment to guarantee that your vehicle handles well and that your tires wear evenly.

           6. **Final Inspection:** We’ll conduct a final inspection for any other potential issues and ensure everything is in perfect order.

Transmission Services at Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair

At Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair, we know that a well-maintained car is a happy car. One of the most overlooked but critical parts of your vehicle is the transmission. Whether you’re cruising down the highway or taking on tight corners, your transmission ensures your car shifts gears smoothly and performs at its best. But like any other major system in your vehicle, your transmission needs regular attention to stay in top shape. Neglect it, and you could be facing costly repairs or even a complete replacement.

In this post, we’ll explain why transmission services are so important, the types of services we offer at Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair, and how keeping up with maintenance can save you time, money, and frustration in the long run.

What Does Your Transmission Actually Do?

Before we get into the details of transmission service, let’s quickly break down what a transmission does. In simple terms, your transmission is responsible for transferring power from the engine to the wheels. It adjusts the amount of power sent to the wheels based on your speed, allowing your vehicle to accelerate, decelerate, and shift gears smoothly. If something goes wrong with your transmission, it can affect everything from shifting gears to engine performance.

At Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair, we see all types of transmissions—whether you're driving a performance car with a manual gearbox or a modern automatic sedan. Regardless of what you drive, a healthy transmission is essential for smooth operation.

Warning Signs That Your Transmission Needs Attention

Your car’s transmission doesn’t just suddenly fail out of nowhere. Often, there are warning signs that can signal trouble. If you notice any of the following, it’s time to get your vehicle checked out:

            Slipping Gears

: If your vehicle struggles to stay in gear or feels like it's slipping out of gear, you may be dealing with a transmission problem.

            Delayed Shifting

: Hesitation or a noticeable delay when shifting gears—especially when you’re trying to accelerate—could indicate low transmission fluid or internal wear.

            Unusual Noises

: Grinding sounds, whining, or clunking noises when you shift gears are clear signs that something isn’t right inside the transmission.

            Warning Lights

: A flashing “Check Engine” or “Transmission” light is a red flag that something needs immediate attention.

           Why Transmission Services Are Critical

Transmission service is often one of the most overlooked aspects of car maintenance, but it’s also one of the most important. At Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair, we emphasize the following benefits of staying on top of your transmission care:

            Fluid Changes

: Transmission fluid lubricates the internal components of the transmission, reducing friction and preventing overheating. Over time, fluid can break down or become contaminated. Regular fluid changes help prevent wear and ensure smooth operation.

            Filter Replacements

: Many vehicles have filters that clean the transmission fluid. When these filters get clogged, the flow of fluid is restricted, which can lead to performance issues or damage. Replacing the filter is an essential part of transmission maintenance.

            Early Detection of Problems

: Regular transmission inspections give us a chance to spot small issues before they become major (and expensive) problems. Whether it’s a simple leak or an internal component starting to wear down, we can address it early and save you from a costly breakdown.

            Prevent Major Repair Costs

: A full transmission replacement is one of the most expensive repairs a car can need. With regular maintenance, you can often avoid the need for a complete overhaul and keep your repair costs down.

Regular Oil Changes: A Key to Vehicle Longevity

Why does Wilson Motorsports Auto Repair stress the importance of regular oil changes?

An oil change is one of the most important maintenance tasks for your vehicle. While it might seem like a simple and routine job, keeping up with regular oil changes plays a crucial role in ensuring the longevity and efficiency of your car's engine. In this blog, Wilson Motorsports will explore why oil changes are essential, how often they should be done, and what could happen if they’re neglected.

           .

           Why Are Oil Changes Important?

Motor oil is the lifeblood of your engine. It lubricates moving parts, reduces friction, prevents overheating, and helps clean the engine by trapping contaminants. Over time, however, oil can become thick, dirty, and less effective, making it essential to replace it periodically.

Here are a few key reasons why regular oil changes are so important:

            Lubrication and Reduced Wear

: Fresh oil lubricates the engine's moving parts, ensuring they move smoothly without friction. This helps reduce wear and tear and prevents parts from getting damaged over time.

            Improved Engine Efficiency

: Clean oil ensures that your engine runs at optimal performance. Old, dirty oil can cause the engine to work harder, reducing fuel efficiency and potentially leading to costly repairs.

            Preventing Overheating

: Oil also helps regulate engine temperature by absorbing and dispersing heat. If oil becomes too old and thick, it can’t effectively carry heat away from critical engine components, leading to overheating and potential engine failure.

            Contaminant Removal

: As oil circulates through the engine, it picks up dirt, dust, and other debris. Over time, the oil gets saturated with these contaminants. Regular oil changes ensure that these impurities are removed, helping to keep your engine clean.

            Increased Engine Lifespan

: Regular oil changes can significantly extend the life of your engine. When oil is changed on schedule, the engine operates more smoothly, reducing the risk of breakdowns and costly repairs down the line.

How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

The frequency of oil changes depends on several factors, including your vehicle’s make and model, the type of oil used, and how you drive. However, a common recommendation is to change the oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles if you're using conventional motor oil. Synthetic oil, which is engineered to perform better at extreme temperatures, may allow for longer intervals, typically ranging from 7,500 to 10,000 miles. However, we always would recommend even if you are using a Full Synthetic oil to change your oil at your schedule oil change intervals that are recommended by the factory make and model recommendations.

It's essential to check your vehicle’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommendation, as some modern cars may have oil change intervals that exceed the typical range. If you're unsure, many service centers offer oil change reminders based on your vehicle’s mileage.

Signs That You Need an Oil Change

Aside from relying on a maintenance schedule, there are several indicators that your oil may need changing:

            Engine Warning Light

: Many vehicles are equipped with an oil change light that will alert you when it’s time for a change. This is typically triggered by low oil pressure or an oil-related issue.

            Loud Engine Noise

: If your engine sounds louder than usual, it may indicate that the oil has lost its effectiveness and isn't lubricating the engine properly.

            Dark or Dirty Oil

: Fresh oil is typically amber in color and translucent. If you check the oil and it appears dark and gritty, it’s time for a change.

            Burning Oil Smell

: If you smell burning oil inside your vehicle, this could mean oil is leaking onto hot engine parts or that it’s degraded and causing friction.

            Decreased Performance

: A noticeable decline in fuel efficiency or engine performance can be a sign that your oil is no longer doing its job effectively.

What Happens If You Skip Oil Changes?

Neglecting regular oil changes can lead to serious consequences for your engine. As oil ages and becomes contaminated, it loses its ability to lubricate, causing friction and excessive wear. In the worst-case scenario, this can result in engine seizure, which may require a complete engine replacement.

Here are some of the risks of skipping oil changes:

            Sludge Build-up

: Dirty oil can combine with dirt, debris, and other contaminants to form sludge, which clogs the engine’s oil passages, limiting oil flow and causing the engine to overheat.

            Engine Damage

: Without proper lubrication, engine components can wear out prematurely, leading to expensive repairs and even total engine failure.

            Reduced Fuel Efficiency

: An engine running on old oil works harder, using more fuel in the process, which means you’ll spend more at the pump.

            Void Warranty

: Many vehicle warranties require that you adhere to a specific maintenance schedule. Failing to change the oil regularly could void your warranty, leaving you with expensive repair costs.

           Conclusion

Oil changes might seem like a small task, but they are critical to the health of your vehicle.

Before jumping right into any automotive restoration it’s really critical to evaluate the car current state. Make sure to check the body engine transmission, suspension, and interior. Look for any signs of rust corrosion or structural damage. Often the nemesis of any classic car restoration, rust can eat through the bodies and create a very expensive project. It is really important to understand what your restoration will entail and budget effectively..

Restoring an old classic can take many forms. From a cosmetic refresh to a full-blown rebuild It is important to decide what your goals are. Are you aiming for a reliable daily driver car or just something you can take out on the weekends?

           Sourcing Parts and Supplies

Finding high-quality parts is really truly crucial for successful restoration that you will be happy with. Wilson Motorsports has 30 years of experience sourcing hard to find classic car parts. Even with all that experience, sometimes parts are unobtainable and adjustments need to be made. Find parts from specialty suppliers that specialize in classic car parts or replicas of original parts. Sometimes we get lucky on those side hard to find parts and find them on websites like , Facebook marketplace or even craigslist, but don’t overlook going to classic car shows because these events can be great for networking to find some of those hard to find as well as looking at other projects that I’ve been completed to get ideas for your own project.

Having the right tools are also important as some parts require specialized tools to be installed. Wilson Motorsports spent acquiring specialty tools for just about everything, but there still isn’t a year that goes by where we don’t have to buy new tools for a special project that we might not have already. Having the right tool is essential and much easier than trying to make your existing tools work.

           Tear Down and Inspection

Before we start any restoration project, we carefully prepare the work area to disassemble the car, documenting each step in writing or with pictures to make make reassembly easier. The worst thing is finishing a job and having a few extra bolts left over. So we often go through a lot of bags and labels to drop bolts that we removed from cars into a sandwich bag and label the bag with where the bolt goes. Carefully inspect all the components and know any that may need repair or replacement paying special attention to areas such as the frame, engine and drivetrain.

           Repairing the Body and Paint

Body restoration and paint often involves repairing or replacing panels, fixing rust and addressing dents. After repairs have been made it’s important to prep the surface for painting. This may involve sandblasting applying basecoat and clearcoat. If you want the finish to match restoration goals it is important to not leave out the prep work.

           Mechanical

The engine and transmission are the heart of your classic car whether you’re rebuilding the original engine or swapping it in for a more modern power plant. Make sure all the parts are in top shape. Make sure to rebuild or replace the worn out parts and don’t forget to check and address the cooling system exhaust Fuel system and rear differential. Another important part of the card to not overlook is the suspension and brakes. These are critical for both safety and performance of your classic car. We do restorations on classic cars at Wilson Motorsports. We often recommend replacing the Warren bushing shocks and brakes to improve handling and driving comfort. There are many companies out there where you can upgrade to modern components if you’re looking for a restomod. A good idea if possible to upgrade your worn rubber bushings with more modern polyurethane, bushings that hold up better to weather and the environment. Consider adding power steering if you don’t have it or upgrading your braking to a brake booster or hydraulic booster, which will give you the greatest breaking performance.

Interior Restoration

The interior of any classic car is where all the comfort and the style comes together. This may involve reupholstering the seats, new carpets replacing the dashboard and fixing and updating all the electrical components. Don’t forget to pay attention to the trim and gauges. Once you sit in your nice new restored car the first thing you’re gonna notice anything that hasn’t been refinished or updated.

Make sure to reassemble your classic very carefully, double checking all connections, fittings, and torque specs. Once assembled thoroughly tested car to make sure everything function has expected..
